Getting Ready For The Next Grade Level

The emphasis of Academic Summer School is to prepare your child for the grade they will enter this Fall. The goal is to maintain and improve proficiencies while reinforcing the school curriculum. Summer School is a relaxed environment where students will experience memorable, theme based teaching and learning.

Program Information
  • 2019 Academic Summer School will run 6 weeks from June 17 to July 26
  • No uniforms are required - Summer Camp T-shirts are required for off-campus field trips only
  • Classes will be in session each week from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
  • Classes are not in session on Wednesdays
  • MCS will observe Independence Day. The Birchwood campus will be closed Thursday and Friday July 4th & 5th.
  • Morning Extended Care (included with Summer School registration) is available as early as 7:30 a.m. until classes begin at 8:30 a.m.
  • Afternoon Summer Day Camp for Summer School Students (optional) is available from 12:00 Noon until 5 p.m.
  • Afternoon Extended Care (included in afternoon Summer Day Camp for Summer School Students tuition) after Summer Day Camp dismissal at 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Summer School Tuition

Tuition for 2019 Academic Summer School is $725 for the 6 week program

Registration is OPEN to all MCS and Community Students Kindergarten - 9th Grade
  • The week containing July 4-5 will be prorated to 3 days
  • Tuition does not include registration fees
  • Registration fees are non-refundable
  • There are no discounts for partial attendance
  • Registrant must meet citizen or resident requirements
Summer School students may register for the optional Summer Day Camp and Wednesday field trips.
  • Tuition for afternoon Summer Day Camp for Summer School students is $200 per week for K-5 and $235 per week for middle school students
  • Tuition includes Wednesday field trips and afternoon Extended Care
  • Tuition also includes afternoon off-campus activities for middle school students


Elementary Grades K-5

  • Entering Kindergarten “Stepping Up to Success”

    Students entering Kindergarten kick start their phonics and reading instruction through Zoo-phonics® and animal-themed lessons and activities. These 6 weeks will help your child begin adapting to the “Big School” learning environment.
  • Entering 1st Grade “Love to Learn”

    1st Grade students will be engaged with animal themes as they build knowledge in science, reading, and writing skills. Guest presenters will be visiting with interactive animal experiences and information.
  • Entering 2nd - 5th Grades "Staying Strong"

    Summer School is pleased to continue offering “Project Based Learning” for grades 2-5. Students will strengthen knowledge and skills from project-based learning, which incorporates investigation and problem solving for real-world scenarios. This engages students at a deeper level across core subjects, including reading, writing, math, technology, and more.

Middle School

  • Entering Middle School 6th - 9th Grades

    Middle School Science
    Using project-based learning, students will work collaboratively to explore the Principles of Flight and how they relate to Bernoulli's Principles through the performance and analysis of several experiments. Much of the activity will be centered around the actual construction of rubber-powered airplane models prior to using them to collect data. For this year, we will be using selected models from the Easy Build Company which will be assembled from the ground up by students working in groups. Other projects that may be covered in this course relate to friction, human reaction time determination, cell biology, and more, as time allows.

    Middle School Culinary Science
    In this class, we will dive into the scientific side of the kitchen! We will explore the science behind cooking, baking, and food in general, with a focus on practical experience in the kitchen. Students will learn key skills and habits that scientists need in a lab, such as following multi-step directions, precise measurement, close observation and documentation, and safety practices. They will also gain a basic understanding of several scientific principles that play a role in the kitchen, knowledge which will equip them to make fabulous food.
